How Acoustic Design Supports Creativity, Clarity, and Confidence for Rangatahi

With this in mind, their new Henderson studio was designed to give young creators a space that feels supportive, inspiring, and technically sound, with high‑quality acoustics playing an important role in shaping how rangatahi focus, express themselves, and connect with their ideas.

The Solution

To bring Crescendo’s vision to life, the studio needed acoustic design that could genuinely support young people as they learn, experiment, and create. Professional sound control was essential—not just for polished recordings and sound, but for fostering an environment where rangatahi can feel at ease expressing themselves. David Atai, music production mentor at Crescendo and Industry Professional says, “As mentors and producers, our job is to bring the best out of people and the acoustics of a room makes a massive difference.”

Autex Acoustics® worked closely with the team to tailor treatments for each space, selecting Vertiface®‑fronted Quietspace® Panels for refined sound absorption and Cube™ panels. By integrating these solutions across the video podcast room, recording booths, producer studio, and main recording space, the studio has been shaped into a place where every creative moment can be heard clearly and confidently. “The rangatahi really notice a difference, and it allows us to focus entirely on the creative process” says David.

The Result

The completed acoustic fit‑out has created a welcoming, professional environment where rangatahi can hear their ideas clearly and create with confidence. Quietspace and Cube work together to bring clarity and comfort to each room, supporting everything from recording sessions to mentoring conversations. This improved sound quality not only strengthens technical outcomes but also helps young people feel more at ease as they explore and express their creativity. The result is a studio that genuinely supports their growth—artistically, personally, and together as a community.

Loyal Henwood, a Youth Mentor for Crescendo’s Te Uranga and Te Are programmes who himself came through Crescendo under the mentorship of Dave Atai, says “As I went through, the facilities made it feel like a professional work space where I could create things, make mistakes, and get better.” “Seeing what Crescendo has done for me, I just want to keep giving back as a mentor. I wouldn’t be here or have learned as much as I have without them.”
